LASIK is one of the most exciting types of refractive surgery and can correct a wide range of vision problems. Nearsightedness, farsightedness and distorted vision caused by astigmatism can most often be successfully treated with extraordinary results, so you have the freedom to do the things you love without the burden of glasses or contacts.
LASIK (Laser Assisted in Situ Keratomileusis) is a procedure used to correct vision problems such as myopia (nearsightedness), hyperopia (farsightedness), and astigmatism. When the cornea and the lens are perfectly matched, vision is crisp and clear. When they are not, it is called a refractive error and eyesight is blurry. While the lenses of your glasses or contacts help compensate for these imperfections, LASIK resolves them by adjusting the structure of your eye’s cornea to smooth it back into shape.
To find out if LASIK is right for you, we will perform an extensive exam and talk to you about your lifestyle and goals for better vision. The recommendation for LASIK will be based upon several factors including age, degree of refractive error, and lifestyle. While some patients may benefit from LASIK eye surgery, others may receive the best possible results from PRK (photorefractive keratectomy), CLEAR™ (Clear Lens Extraction and Replacement), or the Visian ICL™ (Implantable Collamer Lens). If you have any questions regarding LASIK or any other refractive procedure, please call us. We’ll be happy to answer all of your questions.
During the LASIK procedure, a laser is used to carefully reshape the cornea. The procedure is painless and takes about 15 minutes for both eyes. A hinged flap is created in your eye to allow access to the cornea. A special instrument is used to gently lift the flap of corneal tissue. Once the flap is lifted, a precision laser reshapes the cornea allowing light to focus at just the right spot on your retina resulting in clearer vision. The flap is then repositioned, creating a self-sealing bond. No stitches are needed.
LASIK isn’t commonly covered by many insurance plans, however St. Luke’s accepts cash, checks, and credit cards. In addition, we offer interest-free payment plans through Care Credit. Click here to apply online.
