Marginal Blepharitis
(Granulated Eyelids)
A brief explanation

Blepharitis is a common inflammatory condition that affects the eyelids. It usually causes irritation of the lid margins, burning, and itching.  But sometimes there are no symptoms at all.

Inflammation of the "white" of the eye (conjunctivitis), superficial inflammation of the lower portion of the cornea (keratitis), and styes are often associated with blepharitis.

Simply keeping the eyelashes clean can minimize the symptoms.   Begin by soaking a clean washcloth in hot tap water.  Place the compress on closed eyelids for 2 minutes, then repeat. Next, gently scrub the eyelids using a washcloth and a mixture of equal parts of baby shampoo and water.  Rinse the lids thoroughly.

This treatment should be repeated two to three times daily for two weeks, then reduced to once daily.  Like dandruff, there is no cure for blepharitis; but it can be controlled.  In some cases, drops or ointments are necessary for flare-ups or more severe cases.
