James P. Gills, M.D. - Founder of St. Luke's Cataract and Laser InstituteBorn in Bluefield, West Virginia, James P. Gills, MD received his bachelor's degree in engineering from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and his medical degree from Duke University Medical Center.  After completing his residency at Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute, Dr. Gills served as Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology at Duke from 1965 until 1968.

In 1968, Dr. Gills and his family moved to Florida, where he opened his first clinic.  Soon after, he became the first ophthalmologist in the United States to dedicate his practice to the treatment of cataracts via the use of intraocular lens implants - long before it was common practice.

Dr. Gills' contributions to ophthalmic surgery have earned him the reputation of technological leader and innovator.  His interest in raising the standard of care for ophthalmic patients has led to advances such as:  improved intraocular lens power accuracy, refinements of incision techniques, and piggyback intraocular lenses.  In 1980, he described filtering irrigating solutions for cataract surgery and introduced formulations for intraocular antibiotics - practices that may have saved countless eyes.  Perhaps his most outstanding accomplishment, the use of lidocaine intraocularly for cataract surgery, has revolutionized the way the procedure is performed today.

In 1996, Dr. Gills' colleagues recognized him by bestowing on him the prestigious Innovator's Award.  This award highlights one person each year who has contributed to the development of new and innovative ideas that are changing the field of ophthalmology.  Other honors he has received from his profession include appointment to the Duke University Medical Center's Board of Visitors, the Advisory Board of Wilmer Ophthalmological Institute of Johns Hopkins University, and the Board of Directors for the American College of Eye Surgeons.  He was among the 111 Best Ophthalmologists in America selected by a national survey conducted by Ophthalmology Times, and is featured in The Best Doctors in America.

Today, as founder and director of St. Luke's Cataract and Laser Institute, the country's largest free-standing ambulatory surgery and eye care center, Dr. Gills continues to contribute to his field and those less fortunate.  He has partnered with Christian Blind Missions International to raise funds for one of the largest humanitarian efforts of its kind:  the eradication of preventable blindness worldwide by 2020.  The raised funds will be matched by an international civic organization with the same goal.  Dr. and Mrs. Gills have endowed four chairs in ophthalmology for medical and surgical research:  one to Duke University Medical Center, a "superchair" to the University of South Florida, and two chairs to Johns Hopkins University.

Dr. Gills is the recipient of many medical and educational honors:
